Christ died for all sins: past, present, and future

This is another erroneous twist on the Truth of Christ’s Atoning sacrifice for sin. It must be stated at the outset that Christ died for ALL SINNERS, which includes ALL SIN. This includes those who are headed for eternal destruction.  Their judgment will be that their names are not written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.  They did not accept the offer of forgiveness from God.  Yet Christ paid their penalty for sin nonetheless, and they will be judged according to their works.

John 1:29 (KJV): “…Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”

Now to the deception of this phrase:  “Christ died for all sins: past, present, and future”.  While Christ died for the sins of the world, this should not be used as the basis for believers to think that they are saved no matter what they are doing now or in the future.  This kind of false generalization leads to a logical conclusion that is also false: we are always gonna sin.  It also leads to the self-deception that we are saved regardless of what we do or don’t do in the future, the once saved, always saved itchy ears motto which detaches actions from an assurance of salvation.  It is that Nicolaitans heresy all over again in new clothing, Calvinism.

Romans 3:25(KJV): “Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;”

1 John 2:1 ESV: “My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.”

These scriptures prove that forgiveness can only apply to sins of the past, whether it was 5 minutes ago, or 5 years ago. Furthermore, John tells us, “Don’t sin”. If we are always gonna sin, why would John tell us not to sin? Our relationship or walk with God is always about where we are now, not about where we were yesterday or expect to be in the future.

The Blood of Jesus Christ has a past and continuing aspect to it. When we first come to Christ and are saved, the Blood covers all our past sins and we are cleaned from head to foot, spiritually speaking. During our subsequent walk with God, only our feet can get dirty, and the Blood of Christ has a continuous effect of washing our feet as we confess our sins to the Lord.

 John 13:10 NJKV Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean;

John 15:3 NJKV You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.

To emphasize this last point,  there are 2 aspects of this forgiveness for sins that are past:

  1. those committed beforehand at conversion (whole body being washed, cleaned through the Word at conversion) and,
  2. confession of sins that we may commit after we are converted (feet being washed), i.e., our subsequent walk with the Lord.

But in both cases, it is always with regard to sins in the past.  We only confess sins that have already occurred, i.e., that we have knowledge about.

We can have  confidence that in the future the Blood of Christ will have a continuing, cleansing aspect to it as we keep our faith and confess our sins.

1 John 1: 7,9 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

One final point to make is to distinguish between forgiveness of sins and the act that makes it possible, the death of Christ.  Hebrews KJV 10:12,14 says:

12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;

14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

Hebrews 10:12 says that Christ died for all sins for all sinners: past, present, and future.  This satisfies the legal justice of God that makes it possible for Him to forgive sins.

Hebrews 10:14 shows that this forgiveness only applies to believers who are being sanctified through the indwelling Power of the Holy Spirit.

So if you willfully reject the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, you effectively end your covenantal relationship with God and His Christ.  That is why believers should not talk about their future sins being forgiven.  It is presumptuous and reflects a cavalier, prideful, and arrogant perspective of God’s Mercy towards us.  This is what got the Jews of Jesus’ day in trouble: they assumed their relationship with God but with the wrong attitude.  It is true that the legal basis for God’s justice applies to future sins, but not the forgiveness aspect of it.  Sin has to be dealt with by confessing those sins in the life of a believer.

I want to die. I think that the unforgivable sin is never accepting Jesus into your heart. I have. Thanks for helping me with these scriptures. I have a concordance and would’ve looked them up myself. I am content to read those you have provided.

“I want to die”. I know I went through the “dark valley” many times and felt the same way. Depression is one of Satan’s key weapons. All I can tell you, Terri, is that I just keep crying out to the Lord about all my pain and suffering until He comes and takes away my burden. And He has done that to me faithfully throughout my Christian experience. Sometimes right away and sometimes I have to wait. As the scriptures say, “Wait on the Lord, and again I say wait.”

Isaiah 40:31 “They That Wait Upon The Lord, Shall Renew Their Strength, They Shall Mount Up with Wings of Eagles, They Shall Run and Not Be Weary, They shall walk and not give up”.

Psalm 27:14 “Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.”

But make sure the suffering isn’t because of something you have done or failed to do. Has someone asked you to forgive them and you haven’t? Have you sinned and not confessed it? Have you offended someone and you haven’t confronted them and asked for forgiveness?

With all due respect you seem to be contradicting your self and the Bible. I believe that the Bible teaches that Jesus atoned for our past present and future sins and that to deny this is a false Gospel and doctrine of devils. Before we go further let me make it clear that I do not hold to once saved always saved and cheap grace. I believe that the Atonement is universal in provision but limited in application as it is conditional and only becomes a redemptive reality to those who repent and believe to receive forgiveness for their sins past present and future. Calvinists in my opinion attack the Gospel of Christ and teach a false Gospel but some who believe in conditional security are also doing the same. The Bible is full of promises and calls from God to saved persons who fall into sin and backslide. Its full of teaching of how some of them repented and where forgiven. What are we going to do with all these teachings and all Bible promises of forgiveness of sins for repentant Christians? To teach limited atonement as Calvinists do is false doctrine and an attack against the Gospel and insult to the blood of Christ but to teach that Jesus only atoned for our past pre conversion sins is just as much a heresy. You begin with attempting to say Jesus did not atone for our sins past present and future and then write about being forgiven after being saved. I am sure you are a good person and saved soul and possibly you have wrote in a way which can be misunderstood. I am not attacking you and am for and not against you. What are you going to do with all those you and I know who have backslide then been restored? That would not be possibly if what you write was true and its not true but deception. If you then ever sin or backslide then according to your doctrine you have a one way ticket to Hell. To say Jesus did not atone for our past present and future pre and post conversion sins is 100 present False Gospel and doctrine of devils. What an insult to the precious blood of Christ. Yes its true that to have our past present and future sins forgiven we must repent and believe and that grace does not teach licence to sin. That even though God will forgive those who repent that eternal forgiveness does not mean we escape earthly consequences of our sins. Jesus atoned for all our sins past present and future and to deny this is to deny the doctrine of Christ and makes one antichrist.

You misunderstood what I said. There are 2 aspects to this forgiveness: those committed beforehand at conversion and those we may commit after we are converted, i.e., our subsequent walk with the Lord. But in both cases, it is always with regard to sins in the past. I used the illustration of our whole body being washed at conversion (John 13:10). Afterwards, we only need our feet to be washed (subsequent walk with the Lord).

I will add this additional explanation to the end of the blog.

I think you missed a very important verse in Hebrews 10:12- But this man, after HE had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of GOD. Forever is all sins, past present and future… [Author omitted ensuing rant about modern bibles and false teachers since it deviates from the point at hand.]

Thanks for your opinion. I will add another section at the end of my blog to address Hebrews 10:12 in the context of this blog.

Hebrews 10:12 KJV says, But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God.” Truly, there is only one sacrifice for the sins of EVERYONE: past, present, and future, and that is the death of Jesus Christ. Now pay attention to the context, especially 2 verses further, Hebrews 10:14 KJV, “For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.” So, there are 2 things going on here:

          1. the death of Jesus Christ for all humanity to satisfy the legal justice of God (v12), and
          2. the benefit of that death by forgiveness through His Mercy for only those that believe (v14).

This blog is only referring to context of the second verse, v14, where believers are involved. Our ongoing walk with the Lord requires us to confess our sins after they have occurred (the past). And this continuing act of faith by continuing to confess our sins will keep our fellowship with the Father and the Son intact. as 1 John 1 KJV says:

6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
