As the previous section demonstrated on “Christians Must Keep the 10 Commandments”, Christians are not obligated to keep the 10 commandments. This includes obligations related to the Sabbath Law or Lord’s Day. The following New Testament Scriptures clearly relieve Christians of the obligation to honor these specific days as proscribed by the Old Testament or men.

“16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: 17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.” Col 2:16-17 (KJV)

“5 One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. 6 He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it.” Romans 14:5-6 (KJV)

Again, as stated in the “Christians Must Keep the 10 Commandments” section, the “Law and the Prophets” is a phrase Christ used to characterize the general precepts of the Old Testament, avoiding too much focus on the individual laws which can detract from seeing the “big picture”.

“Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.” Matt 7:12 (KJV)

“23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. 24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.” Matt 23:23-24 (KJV)

Now if anyone still wants to be contentious about such things, consider the real, deep meaning of the Sabbath in the New Testament where the Sabbath is really our rest from own works as we yield to the Holy Spirit and allow God to do the work in us, not some special observance of a particular day of the week:

“Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.” Heb 4:1 (KJV)

“9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. 10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. 11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.” Heb 4:9-11(KJV)
